CHANGE

A problem with change…

Most people have a problem with change. However, consider this, if it wasn’t for change, we wouldn’t be here!  Why does it cause so much stress? Personally, I think the stress is self-induced because of not knowing what to expect. Unfortunately, that’s the problem with change, not knowing what to expect. If we knew what to expect, it would be called planning. Regardless, change happens every day, so it is in our best interest to learn to manage change whenever possible.

Any time we want to make a change, we have to remember, Change is a process. It doesn’t automatically occur. It requires action on our part to enable the process. Regardless of whether we are intending to change, or if it is thrust upon, there is a process involved for the change to occur, and for us to determine how we will respond or react.

Change involves a 3-Step process. 1st is the thought. 2nd the feeling. 3rd an action occurs.

Select a situation or issue you’re dealing with that involves change. What is the source of the stress or the struggle? What thoughts do you experience around this situation? Thoughts can be complicated. Try to focus your thoughts on the desired outcome of the situation. What positives can you focus on? Engage yourself in all aspects of the thought to embrace it (5w+h -who.what.where.when.why.how). Maintain this positive focus, as it will determine how you feel.

Since our thoughts determine our feelings, conflicting thoughts will create conflicting feelings, interfering with your success. The key is to have thoughts grounded in reality. We need to feel we can be successful with a solid foundation supporting us. This feeling of success began with your thoughts.

Strong feelings tend to elicit a ‘respond with action’ approach. But are we responding or reacting? Responsive feelings are realistic, manageable and controlled. Reactive feelings tend to be unpredictable, confusing, and sometimes out of control. Whatever the feeling, it will be reflected in the action that follows.

The action you choose to take is the reflection, product or outcome of your thoughts and feelings. Are you pleased with your actions? How do these actions impact how you feel about yourself? If your actions are not being helpful and/or causing you grief, there is a problem. Work backwards from the action to see where the feelings began, and the thought that started everything! If we don’t like what we see, make a change. They’re your thoughts and feelings. Use them to your advantage.
