True Self- the type of person someone really is, an ideal that guides our behavior.           

When we think about our true self, chances are we are already exhibiting characteristics unknowingly. Those experiences where we walk away feeling happy and accomplished, may be related to experiencing our true self. Or the impact on others when we can elicit a specific response, that brings joy and laughter.

The insights below will enable you to expand your understanding of your true self, its characteristics, and the impact on others. If you find examples listed of behaviors you’ve exhibited, check them. How many are there? You were being your true self. Congratulations!

True Self…

§  Is important as it’s needed in creating a powerful sense of well-being and purpose.

§  Is inspiring to those seeing it in action.

§  Usually happens around age 50, when we realize we’re not happy about decisions we’ve made in life.

§  When shown, there is no self-doubt, there is clarity, energy, and priorities are clear.

§  Is not shown if it will intimidate, offend, or alienate.

§  Enables people to be comfortable around you.

§  When discovered, no one can tell you who you are.

§  Is expressed when in an environment allowing you to be your true self.

§  Is masked when safety or protection is a factor.

§  Must be honored or motivation is destroyed and you’re less likely to pursue new experiences or opportunities.

Getting to know your true self

Conduct a Personal Assessment:

§  What are you passionate about?

§  What can you do well?

§  Acknowledge who you are. (Shortcomings, accomplishments, etc.)

§  Assess all relationships impacting you.

§  Request feedback from relevant sources.

§  What do you do for fun?

So, you feel you’re already being your true self. Are you…

1.  Putting yourself 1st vs people you would normally prioritize ahead of yourself?

2.  Being honest with yourself…always?

3.  Getting to know yourself (acknowledge likes, dislikes, skills, shortcomings, talents, etc.)?

4.  Identifying, acknowledging, accepting your feelings, and assessing why you feel as you do?

5.  Spending quiet time listening within?

What happens when you’re in the presence of people you admire? Consider doing the following:

§  Don’t make assumptions.

§  Don’t allow yourself to be intimidated.

§  Be aware of your state of mind (what you’re feeling at that time).

§  Stay focused.

Your true self is your real self! It’s unfortunate we don’t arrive at this point earlier in life. Regardless of where you are now, age wise, get in touch with your true self, if you haven’t already. You deserve the best possible life, and having confidence to be who you are is a good start.
